Overview

Healthcare is for everyone. If you are providing healthcare through any service, you must be prepared to serve a diverse range of people.

When people have bad experiences with health care staff simply because they are (or seem) different, they may hide important information about themselves - or worse, they may not return for needed health care.

It is the job of everyone at a healthcare service to make people feel welcome and comfortable.

This module is designed to help everyone working in a healthcare service to provide an affirmative, inclusive, and respectful environment for all clients. It specifically focusses on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual people and other sexual and gender (LGBTIQA+) minorities.

This module will discuss terms and concepts as well as some common health concerns. It also includes suggestions for communicating with LGBTIQA+ people, providing them with good service, and creating a safe, affirming, and inclusive environment.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Know the general terms generally used within the LGBTQIA+ community to describe gender, sexual identity and sexual orientation.
  • Understand the barriers for LGBTIQA+ people in accessing healthcare.
  • Know the health concerns that many LGBTIQA+ people may have or may be vulnerable to.
  • Identify ways a health service can create a more welcoming environment.
  • Identify ways an individual working in a health service can create a welcoming environment.
