Overview

Venous blood gases are capable of providing information into tissue oxygenation, systemic carbon dioxide(CO2) levels, and pH balance, however, because they are less accurate than arterial blood gases (ABG), they are less widely used. Nonetheless, nurses and midwives should have an understanding of their use and limitations in the clinical setting.

This module provides a brief overview of what insights can be gained from venous blood gases.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Know the normal values of venous blood gas levels.
  • Understand when a venous blood gas may be useful.
  • Know the preferred location for drawing a venous blood gas.
