Esomeprazole is the second most prescribed medication in Australia. It is a proton pump inhibitor prescribed to treat reflux oesophagitis (heartburn), peptic ulcers. Recent research published in the British Medical Journal BMJ Open, indicates a significant association between the use of proton pump inhibitors and the risk of all cause mortality (death).
