Overview

Esomeprazole is the second most prescribed medication in Australia. It is a proton pump inhibitor prescribed to treat reflux oesophagitis (heartburn), peptic ulcers. Recent research published in the British Medical Journal BMJ Open, indicates a significant association between the use of proton pump inhibitors and the risk of all cause mortality (death).  

This brief module provides an outline of the uses, indications, doses, contraindications, and adverse effects of esomeprazole. It is recommended for all those involved in nursing care.
