Overview

This module discusses the potential short-term and long-term impacts of obesity in pregnancy for both mother and child. Included in this discussion is how specialised monitoring and care by midwives, primary care nurses, and other maternal healthcare team members can assist in preventing or minimising these adverse consequences.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Discuss how pre-conception obesity can impact the fertility and pregnancy of women and preventative interventions to minimise those impacts.
  • Explain how obesity in pregnancy is defined and current weight management guidelines for women in this population.
  • Describe the potential maternal and fetal complications of obesity in pregnancy during the antenatal period.
  • Outline considerations for managing antenatal complications of obesity in pregnancy.
  • Describe the birth complications that may potentially occur in the intrapartum stage due to obesity and the management required.
  • Discuss the potential risks to maternal and neonatal health in the post-partum phase and longer term from obesity in pregnancy.
