Aged care and restrictive practices: Responsibilities and minimising use (2 of 2)

Restrictive practices have traditionally been used in aged care to manage behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.  

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (Commission) is committed to minimising risks to recipients of aged care (Care Recipients) and ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.

The use of restrictive practices in Care Recipients must always be a last resort, in the least restrictive form possible, and for the shortest time.

Building on the information covered in the previous module (Aged care and restrictive practices: Definitions, principles and ethics), this module focuses on responsibilities in relation to the use of restrictive practices, behaviour support plans, and concludes with a discussion of alternative strategies to consider in managing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.
